4.25 x 3.25 x 2 in

This piece incorporates remnants of dying ash trees from my childhood home, killed by the Emerald Ash Borer—a tiny green beetle that lays eggs within the intricate tunnels it bores beneath the bark. Inspired by the way trees use scent signals to warn one another of potential threats, the 'Scent Receptacle' houses diseased wood trimmings saturated with manuka oil—the same odor used to lure the parasitic beetle into cone-shaped traps.

This frame contains looping footage of the last known sighting of the Kauaʻi ʻōʻō before its extinction. He perches on what may have been his favorite tree, drinking nectar from its sweet, blooming flowers, singing his mating call over and over for a mate that would never come.
