This piece incorporates remnants of two dying ash trees from my childhood home that were infected by the Emerald Ash Borer—a tiny green beetle that kills it’s host by laying eggs in the intricate patterns it bores into the bark. Inspired by trees using scent signals to warn one another of potential threats, the Scent Receptacle houses diseased sawdust saturated with manuka oil—emitting the same odor that is used to lure the parasitic beetle to their death in cone-shaped traps.

This frame contains a looping recording of the last known sighting of the Kauaʻi ʻōʻō which has since gone extinct. It shows him perched in what might have been his favorite tree, where he likely drank nectar from its blooming flowers, and where he sang his mating call over and over for a mate that would never come.
